The number one business strategy for financial planners – part one

If you are a financial planner and want to improve your business results this article shares the most powerful yet under-utilised strategy.

Whether you want to improve client outcomes, upgrade your services, or run a more efficient operation, there is a leverage point that can, in my experience, often produce immediate results.

But before we begin to look at this strategy let’s look at what we tend to do when we want to instigate change and why this does always help.

Information is everywhere

Do businesses stagnate or fail because of a lack of information?

Rarely.

If you want to know how to do something, then you just Google it. There are few secrets in business today.

If you want to know how to get clients, run better meetings, be more efficient, manage your time, or create better systems, the information is there.

I love information and it can be helpful. Yet, at the same time, why did Michael Gerber of ‘The E-Myth’ fame say:

“Why is it that with all the information available today on how to be successful in small business, so few people really are?”

The state of mind factor

Your state of mind affects, more than anything else, your level of performance, ability to implement change, and quality of experience.

Yet our state of mind is invisible to most of us, most of the time.

Of course, we may be aware of how we feel whether that be clear-minded, present, and calm or tense, anxious, and distracted. But most people do not realise just how significant their state of mind is to their output.

So, let’s consider just some of the qualities of a healthy mind:

  • Creativity – you can think on your feet, solve problems more easily, and think of innovative ideas.
  • Resilience – you get over setbacks quickly, do not take things personally, and become discouragement proof. 
  • Non-judgemental – you are kinder to yourself, more compassionate towards others, and build trust easily.
  • Loving – people warm to you immediately, you are more forgiving, and feel grateful for your life.
  • Intuitive – you do not over-think, you know when to act and when hold back, and you trust your gut feelings.

And who does not want more of these?

Author and thought leader Alain be Botton wrote:

“A mind in a healthy state is, in the background, continually performing a near-miraculous set of manoeuvres that underpin our moods of clear-sightedness and purpose… A healthy mind is an editing mind, an organ that manages to sieve, from thousands of stray, dramatic, disconcerting, or horrifying thoughts, those particular ideas and sensations that actively need to be entertained in order for us to direct our lives effectively.”

Your mind, just like your body, responds to how you treat it.
