Have you ever found that self-doubt, a low mood, or feeling fearful has held you back?
I’m sure this has been the case for all of us and it can have a big impact upon the quality of our results.
In this article I am sharing how you get past those feelings and into taking action – the only thing that produces results.
Are you a doer or a feeler?
Whilst gathering my ideas to write this post I listened again to Steve Chandler’s audio, ‘Are you a doer or a feeler?’
Steve points out that many people will set a goal and when it comes to taking action, they check in with themselves and ask:
“Do I feel like doing this?”
How they happen to be feeling in the moment determines whether they follow through with the action or not.
Yet the problem with relying upon our feelings as a determinant to doing something is that they are constantly changing. Consequently, feelers often struggle to see things through.
Doers, the other hand, do what needs to be done. In his excellent book, ‘Straight-line leadership’, Dusan Djukich says:
“Straight-line individuals simply decide what they want to accomplish, jot down what the necessary required actions are, and then do the necessary required actions.”
Why you should head into uncomfortable feelings
One thing that has really helped me is understanding resistance and how to respond to it.
I realised that resistance is normal. We all have low moods and, at times, will not feel like doing something we had planned to do. You cannot eliminate this or get away from it. And the more important the activity to your growth and evolution, the more resistance you will feel.
But not feeling like doing something is NOT an instruction to stop. Quite the opposite. It is a signal to continue.
What will acting despite how you feel do for you?
Your self-esteem will soar. You will develop a deep inner confidence of knowing that you can accomplish what you set out to do. You will know that resistance no longer controls you.
I love what Steven Pressfield writes in ‘The war of art‘:
“If tomorrow morning by some stroke of magic every dazed and benighted soul woke up with the power to take the first step towards pursuing his or her dreams, every shrink in the directory would be out of business. Prisons would stand empty. The alcohol and tobacco industries would collapse, along with the junk food, cosmetic surgery, and infotainment businesses, not to mention pharmaceutical companies, hospitals, and the medical profession from top to bottom. Domestic abuse would become extinct, as would addiction, obesity, migraine headaches, road rage, and dandruff.”
